Meeting Minutes - 4/28/24

NCWCA Board Meeting – May 28, 2024 – Online Meeting

Board Members Present: Heang Uy, Butch Ross, Mark Harris, Byron Sigmon, Tripp Rogers, Jamie Belk, Jed Cox, Jacob Tutterow, David Perry, Chase Holleman, Billy Baker.

Coach Belk and Coach Uy facilitated the meeting. The meeting was scheduled to discuss recommendations for girls' dual team championships from the girls' championship committee.

Girls Dual Team Championship Committee: In February, the Board agreed to establish a committee to research and propose an Invitational Girls Dual Team Championship for the 2024-25 season. Coach Uy updated the Board about the committee's work and recommendations:

·         The NCHSAA informed the committee that they would not permit any competition after the reporting deadline of January 30.

·         The committee favored the idea of having more than one division and sought the Board’s input on how this could be arranged.

·         The committee requested the Board’s input regarding proposed date(s) for the girls' dual team championship.

Board Discussion about Girls Dual Team Invitational:

·         Considering the participation in 2024 and the anticipated growth of girls' wrestling next year, the Board agreed that there would be enough teams for two divisions and recommended that separation could be based on ADM rather than classifications.

·         After discussing the logistics of travel, it was agreed that travel would pose a challenge to some teams regardless of when the dual team event is held.

·         There was limited Board support for holding the event over two weekdays (Jan 27/29).

·         There was more support for two Saturdays, the 18th and 25th, with the second Saturday serving as a makeup day in case of weather.

·         While not dismissing the idea, it was noted that overnight tournaments are not popular with many ADs due to costs.

·         The Board agreed that Rankwrestlers.com should be used for seeding and would reach out to them to develop dual team rankings for girls’ teams in North Carolina.

·         The Board did not endorse any specific plan, opting to defer to the subcommittee to make a recommendation.

Additional Board Items:

·         Coach Holleman requested that a proposal be submitted to the NCHSAA for girls to have a minimum of 15 matches for regionals, matching the boys' requirement.

·         It was recommended that a committee be established to collaborate with Rankwrestlers.com to create dual team rankings for girls and to review the current rankings for boys for any necessary adjustments. This was previously addressed in our February meeting as well.

·         Coach Cox proposed a change to the North Carolina blood time rule to eliminate the five-stoppage requirement and align our blood time rule with the NFHS.

·         There was discussion that the Board ask the NCHSAA to limit girls to 55 matches, same as the boys.

·         Coach Cox mentioned the scenario where a wrestler advances to the state finals but misses weight on Saturday at the state tournament.  Do they lose all their team points, which is the penalty for flagrant misconduct? – After looking at the NFHS Case Book and Manual 10.2.7 we learned the champion will receive a forfeit win, there is no second place winner, but the wrestler not making weight may keep their advancement points plus any bonus points earned in the tournament.  The wrestler not making weight would not receive placement points for 2nd place.
