Meeting Minutes - 10/2/2022
Oct 2, 2022 - NCWCA Board Meeting: All members present
Coaches Association Dues - David reported about our finances and that we currently have approximately $1400. The Board was reminded to pay dues ASAP as we will be asking the membership for dues prior to the start of the season. David will keep a spreadsheet of coaches who’ve paid and will not include members whose dues have lapsed. Mark reminded David about the upcoming payment for the NCWCA website.
Hydration Testing Date - Jamie noted that a date has not been set for the start of hydration testing for the upcoming season. Heang will reach out to Tra Waters at the NCHSAA for a date and for that date to be posted on the NCHSAA website. The typical start of testing is one week prior to the first practice which this year would begin October 24.
All Star Meet - The Board discussed whether to continue our relationship with the South Carolina All Star meet or to start our own meet. Both Mark and Billy noted that the showcase, fun, and social aspect of the meet had changed in recent years and Jamie noted that South Carolina appears to prefer that we not come at all. So. We now need to determine how, when, and where an all-star meet will happen in 2023. Options include partnering with the NCCA, USA Wrestling, or possibly as a showcase with either the ACC or SoCon wrestling tournaments. The Board agreed that the best time would be immediately after the season. A subcommittee consisting of Jamie Belk, Chase Holleman, David Perry, and Ben Watson will work on the logistics of a NC all-star meet for next year.
Women’s Wrestling - Heang noted the women’s regionals will be held on Thursday January 26, after the reporting date for state duals. The Board was encouraged to inform coaches that the rationale for the Jan. 26 date is that, while girls are still allowed to wrestle on a boys team, teams don’t have to choose between state dual playoffs or women’s regionals for their athletes.
Bill Mayhew Legacy Award - The Board agreed to continue recognizing one coach annually for the Bill Mayhew Legacy in wrestling award. It was noted that Coach Mayhew was touched by the recognition. The process for the Board nominating and selecting a 2023 recipient should begin immediately. An email thread will begin this process this coming week.
Board Elections in July 2023 - Board elections will happen this summer and our bylaws allow us to hold both in person and online voting. Jamie Belk will automatically become our new Board President and the Board will nominate its next VP from within its ranks. Six Board members have 2 years left on their term and six members are up for reelection and will decide to run or not. Here is the status of the current Board terms:
Belk - 2 years as President
Baker - 2 years remaining
Carey - 2 years remaining
Rogers - 2 years remaining
Cox - 2 years remaining
Sigmon - 2 years remaining
Harris - term expires
Watson - term expires
Ross - term expires
Perry - term expires
Holleman - term expires
Uy - Term expires
Regional Reps - David will head up assigning non-voting regional representatives to the Board for 2022-23. Jed reported he’s heard from coaches about serving and the Board agreed that we should encourage regional reps to run for Board sets next July. Mark noted that 1A West will need a new regional rep as Coach Odom has retired at Robbinsville.
Misc. The Board agreed we would continue issuing all-state certificates at the state tournament this year. Jamie will head up the certificates.
