NCWCA Board Meeting 1/9/22
All 12 Board members present
· NC vs. SC All Star Match – Coach Belk reported that SC has invited a NC team to participate in the annual NC vs. SC all-star meet in Myrtle Beach on Friday March 4, 2022. The Board agreed that NC should participate in the event. Coach Belk will take the lead on this. Coaches must be dues paying members of the association and nominate their own wrestlers. We discussed the option of spending Thursday night. Currently the plan is to send wrestlers down during the day Friday, practicing before weigh-ins, and wrestling in the all-star dual on Friday night. Information will be sent to all coaches soon.
· Mat News Certificates – The association will again provide certificates recognizing all state wrestlers from the 2022 State Tournament. This will include the top 4 finishers in each of the 4 classifications. Cost, printing, and distribution are to be handled by the association.
· Recognition of Coach Mayhew Coach Bill Mayhew of South Iredell is currently in his 59th season of coaching, closing on an extremely rare 60-year career in coaching. The Board will recognize Coach Mayhew by presenting a plaque to him at this year’s state tournament. Coach Harris will order the plaque. The Board would like to begin an annual award, named after Coach Mayhew, to recognize those who serve the wrestling community for extraordinary achievements including, but not limited to longevity.
· Non-Voting Regional Reps – Coach Perry reported that non-voting reginal reps are in place and ready to serve as liaisons to the Coaches Board. A Zoom meeting with regional reps will take place prior to the state playoffs. The meeting will update regional reps on Board matters and key information they can share with coaches at the upcoming regional tournaments.
· Girl’s Wrestling Update: The girls open state championships will be February 5, 2022 at Rise Indoor Sports in Bermuda Run. The 12 weight, weight class system from TN will be used, with 285 grandfathered in for this year only. Coach Holleman and Coach Uy updated the Board about the sanctioning process for girl’s wrestling. The NCHSAA Board is to define how many girls constitute a team and determine the timeline for sanctioning. Currently the path to sanctioning girls wrestling seems likely and should happen in the next 1-2 years. Our Board agreed to again submit a proposal to sanction girl’s wrestling in 2022. Coach Cox asked if girls may compete in both the boys and girls state championships. Coach Uy confirmed that girls can compete in both events.
Rank Wrestlers and Dual Team Seeding: Coach Perry addressed the Rank Wrestlers dual team rankings, specifically if they reward individual strength disproportionately. Other concerns were duplication of dual results (teams in error put different dates for same match, e.g.)Coach Carey also pointed out that results for individuals can be skewed when competing against teams / individuals from other states. Uy and Harris both reported that to date, issues with Rank Wrestlers were addressed quickly and effectively by their staff (Kirk).
