Meeting Minutes - 7/17/23
NCWCA Board Meeting – July 17, 2023 – Greensboro, NC
Present: Billy Baker, Mark Harris, Byron Sigmon, Tripp Rogers, Ben Watson, Jamie Belk, Jed Cox
The annual summer meeting included discussion about state tournament seeding, rule changes, and Board elections.
Items Discussed:
· The pairings for the state tournament rotate over a four-year period. Coaches have learned the order of the rotation bringing concern of forfeits in regional finals match for a seeding advantage in the state tournament. The Board recommends the NCHSAA make the pairings random. This will be discussed at the fall meeting with Tra.
· The Board will continue monitoring realignment and how it may affect the administration of the state tournament. At this time there is nothing to be done. In the event a 5th, 6th, or 7th classification is added in 2025, the Board will present options to enable the boys and girls state tournaments to remain in a Coliseum over a 3-day span.
· Coach Carey will resign his Board seat with two years remaining in the term. The Board will vote on his replacement. NCWCA Bylaws designate the Board appoint a replacement in the event of a vacancy. This will be resolved after Board elections conclude on August 1.
· 2023-2024 NFHS rule changes will require some clarification from the NCHSAA. One rule change discussed is the new medical forfeit option and the tournament director’s role in designating a medical forfeit. Coach Harris will be attending the NFHS Rules interpretation Meeting in Fort Lauderdale later this month and will ask for clarification from the NFHS.
Wrestling Coaches Meeting – Greensboro Coliseum – July 18, 2023.
Present: Jamie Belk, Tripp Rogers, Mark Harris, Ben Watson, Byron Sigmon. Jamie Belk facilitated the coaches meeting.
Issue brought forward include:
· The girl’s regional tournament date announced was Thursday during the Rules clinic. The Board will reach out to see if that was an error.
· The Board was asked to make available a list of head coaches, their schools and contact information for scheduling purposes.
· The Board was asked to consider asking the NCHSAA for an expansion of the boy’s dual team playoffs, currently at 32 teams.
· Several questions were asked about girl’s wrestling including: the number of weekly events allowed for girls who compete in boys’ and girls’ meets, the prospect of a girl’s dual team invitational, seeding criteria for girls who compete in the boys regional, etc. Coach Belk said the Board will meet with the NCHSAA this fall and address these questions.
· The Board was asked to provide timely feedback about these questions and other important information to the coaches prior to the start of the 2023-24 season.
